M8.3 Pesticides

What did you find out about the pesticide residues that may be in or on your food?

I think that it is alarming that there were 33 pesticides on my broccoli and that a majority of them were hormone distributors. It is well known that vegetables are good for you, but to know that there are all of these toxic pesticides on the health foods we are eating.

For the chicken breast, there were 7 known pesticides.

To see that both of these products have Honeybee toxins is concerning because the honeybee population is so important to the survival of the environment that we know.

What should we be doing about this in terms of public health, not just in terms of our personal choices?

There should be more regulations around the various pesticides that are used on all of the food that we eat and more environmental push back to continue to preserve honeybees.

  1. Hi Kera,
I am shocked by the number of pesticides in broccoli! It makes me rather nervous and less hesitant to eat broccoli. I think it goes back to what Marisa suggested in eating organic foods to reduce our pesticide intake. It does appear to be manageable to make these small changes to improve our overall health.

  2. Hi Kera,
Wow 33 pesticides on broccoli! That is crazy. And especially that 7 of them are hormone disruptors. I also wonder if the benefits of eating vegetables like broccoli outweigh the risks of consuming so many pesticides while eating them. It is also concerning that so many of the pesticides on foods are toxic to honeybees. Great point and I agree that there needs to be more regulations around the amount of pesticides used on foods and that if anything to better protect the honeybees we should not use systemic pesticides. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!
