M2.3 Household Products

In addition to all of the health risks that you can be exposed to through your personal care products, products that you use almost everyday can also pose a risk. The two products that I use a lot and wanted to look up on the Household Product Database were "Nature's Miracle 3 in 1 Stain Remover" and the "Mr. Clean Magic Eraser". I was surprised that the pet stain remover showed minimal risks. I figured that, based on the previous products I have looked up, it would be in the moderate-hazard range since it is a product for pets. The Mr. Clean Magic eraser also surprised me. I assumed that something that markets as "magic" cant be all that good for you. The HPD website showed that it was an irritant, but it also did not have any known hazards.

I do think that we need to be more mindful of the different products that we keep in our homes and not just buy products that have "Green", "Organic", "Healthy" in the names.

Everyone should be aware of the risks that they are exposed to through the products in their home. Most people assume that if the label says "safe", "green", "organic" etc. that the product is good for the environment and safe. However, these labels are misleading and can actually hurt you. Its important that people do the research on their products and not just take them at face-value.

  1. Hello Kera,
I'm surprised by your findings, especially for the pet odor/stain remover. My initial assumption that there would be a fragrance in the product that would lead it to be harmful, but I stand corrected. You made an important highlight in that as consumers we should not be influenced by the words "safe, green, organic." Furthermore, it makes sense to further research the products we use because the labels could be misleading. Having research of the product helps reduce the number of chemicals we are exposed to. Interesting post!

  2. Hi Kera,

I personally try to purchase products from brands that use natural ingredients, but I've never really thought about researching their actual content and potential health hazards. This assignment was really eye-opening for me, since I realized the cleaning products I use on a daily basis aren't 100% safe. Companies try to use words like "safe, green, and organic" to attract customers, but for the most part, we simply purchase them because we assume the product is generally safe to use. Thanks for sharing!

  3. Hi Kera,

I also use the Nature’s Miracle brand for stain/odor removing. I am glad there is little risk associated with using it! I was always fooled by those phrases of “green”, “natural” or “organic” phrases that are on products. After our class last night I wasn’t that surprised to learn that those phrases are simply added in order to increase sales and target a certain audience. Now I will be more diligent about doing research on the products I use at home. Thanks for sharing!
