M7.4 Local Environmental Health Department

The San Mateo County Environmental Health Services department covers all of San Mateo county-including Half Moon Bay. They offer a wide variety of services, like hazardous waste removal, information on water protection and use, and pollution prevention-just to name a few. One that I was surprised about was that they also watch over tattoo shops, massage parlors, and public pools. They also have housing programs to help low income families and a food program to make sure the occupants of San Mateo county are cared for. It was interesting to see a wide variety of services that the department offers, especially ones that you wouldn't normally think of.

    Hi Kera,
    It is very interesting to see that they oversee tattoo and massage parlors. I haven't thought of those areas of needing supervision, however is does make sense. For the tattoo parlors - ensuring clean needles can reduce blood borne diseases. For massage parlors, not only can it protect people but also ensuring workplace safety is a huge plus.

    Hi Kera,
    That is great that the San Mateo County Environmental Health Services Department offers many services to protect the environment. I used to live in San Mateo County so I am glad to hear that they are proactive in protecting the environment in many ways. That is so interesting that they watch over tattoo shops and massage parlors. I think that is important and other counties should do the same. I also appreciate that they have housing and food programs to support low income families.

There are several different types of exposures you can come into contact with in your lifetime. You spend the majority of your time at home, work, school, and in the community. M2.3 Household Products

In addition to all of the health risks that you can be exposed to through your personal care products, products that you use almost everyday can also pose a risk. The two products that I use a lot and wanted to look up on the Household Product Database were "Nature's Miracle 3 in 1 Stain Remover" and the "Mr. Clean Magic Eraser". I was surprised that the pet stain remover showed minimal risks. I figured that, based on the previous products I have looked up, it would be in the moderate-hazard range since it is a product for pets. The Mr. Clean Magic eraser also surprised me. I assumed that something that markets as "magic" cant be all that good for you. The HPD website showed that it was an irritant, but it also did not have any known hazards. I am aware of the issue of vanishing bees. I found the teatronaturale article very interesting and informative. My dad used to bee keep (part of his many hobbies) in our home in Bakersfield. He taught me how valuable bees are and to not be afraid of them. He explained to me the importance that bees have on the environment and the world we know. This article addressed a lot of the concerns that he had told me about when I was growing up.
