M4.6 Radon Campaign

I would devise a campaign that promotes awareness through television. According to Nielsen’s National Television Household Universe Estimates, there are 119.6 million TV homes in the U.S. (https://www.nielsen.com/us/en/insights/news/2017/nielsen-estimates-119-6-million-us-tv-homes-2017-2018-tv-season.html) and that is 119.6 million ways to be able to reach out to people in the US about the hazards of Radon. Most people are unaware that they could be exposed to Radon and that it might cause them to develop lung cancer-I know I was unaware until I watched Dr. Akerley's video.

The television campaign would be similar to Dr. Akerley's video and the Anti-tobacco commercials, it would be a series of commercials that are:
1. Simple and easy to understand
2. Explain what Radon is and why it is harmful to us
3. How we can test for Radon in our homes with a free Radon test (through this campaign) and where to get it
4. What we should do if we results come back positive for Radon
5. A number to call for any questions or concerns

Part of this campaign is to provide a free Radon test. This would be funded through the government's EPA budget.

Some potential collaborators on this campaign would be:
1. EPA
2. Dr. Akerley (since his original video would be used as a guideline for the television campaign)
3. The American Lung Association
4. Cancer Learning Center

  1. Hi Kera,

I think your idea to promote radon awareness through television programming is great! Dr. Akerley would be a great spokesperson for your campaign, especially since he's an expert in the radon exposure. Great ideas!

  2. Hello Kera,
Using television is a great way to reach people. It would also help to translate the commercial/television campaign in different languages for others who are non-speaking or deaf can also understand the risks of radon and have access to the radon test. Thanks for your ideas!

  3. Hi Kera,
That is a great idea to have a campaign that promotes awareness about Radon testing through television. I really like your idea of how the message would get across in a simple and easy way to understand. Also, I like the idea to provide free Radon testing and I agree it should be funded by the EPA and great example of potential collaborators. Great post!
